Baton Rouge Charts a Path to Digital Equity with New Broadband Strategic Plan

Baton Rouge, a hub of commerce, education, and creativity in the Gulf South, is taking significant strides to enhance its broadband infrastructure to continue its prominence. Recognizing the critical role of connectivity in modern urban life, the Louisiana Office of Connectivity, under the directive of Governor Jon Bel Edwards, has spent the past two years developing comprehensive recommendations and programming to address statewide connectivity needs.

The City of Baton Rouge and its Metro Council’s’ latest initiative enables Baton Rouge to inform its citizens about the recommendations, language, and assets required to enhance existing internet infrastructure and serve the local areas effectively. This strategic plan is designed to be a model for midsized communities aiming to adopt smart city principles, address markers of poverty, and utilize relevant data to remain competitive and sustainable.

The Walls Project and MetroMorphosis, two key institutions deeply familiar with the city's champions, demands, and aspirations, have partnered to support this effort through the coalition network of OneRouge. Their combined expertise ensures that the proposal offers the necessary insights and timing to recognize broadband as a vital 21st-century utility in Baton Rouge. This perspective is crucial for retaining residents and attracting businesses.

The strategic plan serves multiple purposes: providing essential information and justification for local entities applying for grants to improve connectivity; highlighting the existing broadband infrastructure and resources within the city; offering a foundational understanding of broadband and its importance to local progress; illustrating the city's alignment with state initiatives to foster collaboration and a nuanced approach to Louisiana's technological future; addressing the diverse needs across the metro area to ensure inclusive connectivity; and emphasizing how enhanced broadband can keep Baton Rouge competitive and secure against vulnerabilities.

Baton Rouge's commitment to enhancing its broadband infrastructure is a vital step towards achieving digital equity and ensuring the city's continued growth and competitiveness in the modern era. By leveraging this strategic plan, the city can address connectivity disparities, support local grant applicants, and align with state goals to create a more inclusive and technologically advanced community. With the combined efforts of The Walls Project, MetroMorphosis, and the support of local and state leaders, Baton Rouge is poised to become a model for other midsized communities striving for sustainable development and digital inclusivity. This initiative not only aligns with the mayor's vision for digital equity but also strengthens the foundation for a resilient and prosperous future for all residents.
